Kapi Tjukula – Rock Hole

Acrylic on Canvas
122.0 X 91.5cm
Community: Papunya

This painting represents the women performing a traditional ceremony. The circles are the sites where the women are holding their ceremony. These circles also indicate water or rock holes where water can be found. The background lines represent the landscape in that particular area and can depict body paint designs used for ceremonies. The U shapes are the women. At their side are their wana or digging stick and coolamon or wooden bowl used for carrying items such as water. Knowledge of where to find water was handed down from generation to generation to ensure survival in the desert.
