Iminji – My Country

Ochre, natural pigment, synthetic polymer on canvas

This is the place where we camped at Saddler’s Springs, they used to get the mail from Mount House. The mail man was always drunk. Billy Moore, Dick Sullivan and Jack Calligan, they all killed black fellows. My father died at Mount House, killed himself on grog. When he died my grandmother took me to the bush and grew me up at Lady Forest Ranges King Leopold.
I was really a bushman, no clothes on, we had hair belt cover. We wouldn’t leave the ranges. We were frightened of polcie. My grandfather saw the shootings and was scared.
This is the country where they grew me up. I was just about black with sunburn.
