“When I was a young boy during the mid to early 1930s I lived with my grandfather in the ranges country to get away from the police, their police trackers and the pastoralists. From our hideouts high up in the ranges we saw many groups of prisoners on the neck chain making their way to Derby under police escort. A lot of people were sent to southern gaols like Fremantle and Rottnest Island where it was too cold for Kimberley people. I felt very sad and frightened whenever I saw people in neck chains under escort. I was glad to be running wild in the bush. Some old people used to cry very softly so that the police and the trackers could not hear them.” – Jack Dale
